Our environmental impact

A footrace, without the footprint.

Unlike location-based races, we're able to have almost zero carbon emissions, and we cause very little pollution. Here's an explanation.

We're proud of our environmentally conscious racing formats. Access to fresh air and clean roads is fundamental to our sport, and we want to help maintain them.

We're carbon positive.

That means we absorb more carbon than we expel. Let's dive in →

How we calculate our footprint.

We use computers, we send mail, we use the internet and we sell clothing.

These activities all cost us environmentally.

On average, major races produce one bag of unrecyclable waste per every three participants.*

The carbon effect of travel to races is almost unquantifiable. It's estimated that 85% of total emissions from the London Marathon are from travel.*

The average marathon runner uses two plastic bottles during the event.*

Let's talk about major races.

Drive to the airport. Flight. Wait. Another flight. Shuttle. Taxi. Bus. Wake up for race day. Taxi, bus.

This comes at a cost.

Plastic

Last year, 60,000 plastic bottle were discarded at the Boston marathon.

In 2018, the London Marathon used 919,000 plastic bottles. That's almost six tonnes of plastic.

That is environmentally disastrous.

Tyvek™ Self-Adhesive Bibs

High Density Polyethlyene. Recyclable.

Fun fact: some of these will go on to become automotive parts. Probably the only time they'll move this fast again.

Doesn't like: humans, carbon dioxide, plastic, meteors.

Postage

We operate 99% paperless communications. From race packs, to finishers certificates and bibs, our communications are generally without cost to the environment. *the average letter costs 20g of C02.

We offset the cost of our postage by planting 24 trees per month with Ecologi, removing 12 tonnes of C02 from the atmosphere every year.

Medals

Our medals are made from Poplar Ply. A Lightweight, fully sustainable softwood.

That doesn't stop them looking, and feeling, 🔥
